I think induction can compare with a high end gas stove, but not anything mid range or lower. We've been living in an apartment with a the upscale Whirlpool gas range, the large burner doesn't get hot enough to boil water quickly and doesn't get low enough to simmer. Even the small burners don't go low enough.
In comparison, the induction stove at our house works much better on both the high and low end, is much easier to clean. We had very few pieces of cookware that wouldn't work on the induction burners.
