Two month's salary is the general rule for an engagement ring. But, there are plenty of ways to make your money go farther... shop around, hook up with wholesale brokers and compare stones with similar size, cut, color and clarity. Most places will negotiate on price too (there's huge markup in retail diamond prices).

2 months salary is NOT a rule or measuring stick. That was a marketing ploy created by the DeBeers family, who controls a large portion of the worlds diamomd market. They release diamonds into the market or keep them from entering the market to control prices. Buy the best of what you can afford and pay for with cash. If she doesn’t like that then she’s not not the girl for you.
