thunk at low speed turn going from reverse to fwd on 328i

My 2013 328i has an occasional thunk at low speed turn. It usually happens when car is cold, and when car inches forward after the car is reversed to right(can't recall the thunk happens reverse to left then fwd).

If the car is backed out straight there is no thunk.

The thunk happens when steering is corrected from right(fully locked), and front wheels starts to turn left from fully tilted right position.

This also does not happen when car is warm, e.g. stopping for 30 minutes grocery runs will not trigger thunk, but if stopped overnight or till evening the thunk can occur.

The thunk can occur even when brake pedal is not depressed, but one thought is that the pads/rotors are the culprits, e.g. front pads slightly grab the discs when tires are fully turned?!?

My hope this is not a steering rack issue ....
