I think you give the average person too much credit! How many people know the combustion cycle and that water isn't compressible?
The problem, if it isn't obvious, is sucking water into the intake. it gets inside the cylinder, and when the piston comes up to compress it that doesn't happen. rod bends or snaps and sometimes punches a hole in the side of the block.
