I use the square sponge that comes with the P21 spray and I'm very aware to press into the barrel and to move through to the next series of spokes so as not to attempt too many degrees of sweep when reaching through a spoke.
If I attempt to wipe the inner rim lip all the way around then the brake shield will cut me so I only attempt the inner rim at the 6:00 position ( might be 12:00 position, can't recall)
