I would only use a beater if I had to make a very long commute daily or have to travel on unpaved roads. If it's for city commuting then never. I used to have a summer car/winter beater but winters are long in Canada and it felt dumb to drive a car I wasn't enthused with for 6 months of the year as life is short and I want to drive a car I like every day.
