AWD doesn't change the fact that summer performance tires change from soft and sticky on pavement to slick as ice at roughly 40-45 degrees F. The rubber compound hardens to an extent that it isn't able to grip the road adequately. Winter tires are compounded to remain pliable and able to stick to the road at cold temperatures.
