If a head is broken but not at the base it will just unscrew, very easy takes me 3 mins to do an entire swap out. If the head is over 6 inches tall it may be side entry which isn't as easy. In that case dig the head up and around it to allow the head to be able to come completely out of the ground. Be very careful not to pull too hard or you'll break the swing fitting. Then spin off and the new one back on. Hardest part for homeowners is adjusting the head afterwards.

Or the easiest step is just call an irrigation contractor. I charge between $46-58 per head replaced, labor and parts plus service call of between $45 and $90. If a lot of heads need replaced I waive the service call. Just so you know what it may cost.
good to know. looking to upgrade the heads and sprinkler box with valves.
one estimate came back $3500 new heads, lines and valves. (verbal)
no idea how much piping is involve, how much valves and heads are.
