Imagine you are at the beach with just a towel to lay on and want to jump in the water - what would you do with the ELECTRONIC FOB? Nightmare.
This way, the waterproof and inexpensive card can be safely zipped up in you wet pocket and away you go.
This is my understanding of the logic behind it.

I'm guessing the keycard is available if the phone being used is dead. Phone batteries die all the time.
