Depending on the type of jack stand they can dig into asphalt, scratch concrete, nick/cut epoxy, etc.
Years ago to protect the asphalt, I took some old plywood and cut out 12x12 squares that I place them under the jack stands. I also sometime place them under the front and rear wheels of the jack.
