That total loss thing is pretty interesting because my 335i got totaled for a lot less damage being an 07 sport pretty much loaded with rear suspension damage, so this thing might have kicked the bucket too if insurance had got their hands on it.

Insurance total losses and what random people do with damaged cars are often very different. Insurance company is looking at what it costs for a repair shop to put it back to close to perfect condition. Many people look at what it takes for them to DIY a car to usable condition and the numbers can be radically different.
