I was kind of in the same boat. But I declined most offers because of travel. I did enough of that early on in my career.
When I had my talk with my boss, I had the last 5 years of paperwork that my department implemented that saved significant money and/or improved processes in the plant. Plus I told him that if I were to ever decide to leave, they would need at least two people since I am the Engineering Manager, but I'm also over IT and the Help Desk.
So while I may be writing code for an automated reactor process.....I may also be tasked that day with setting up a new user with a PC, e-mail, Terminal Services Access, etc.
He's from a Sales background, so he doesn't understand the technical side of things and how the two roles can be so different.
That sucks about the text. At least my boss was man enough to accept a Meeting Request to go over everything face to face.
I hope you get what you are asking for. Used to be time invested meant something. The only thing I have going for me here is that our processes and chemistry are so difficult. Anyone coming in our doors are typically lost for the first year they are here if they make it that long!
