Initially it was suggestion shelved at the eleventh hour. That a 3er still in camouflage would pick up Dr. Draeger after the M5 introduction.
And it would be used to tease the audience both in the hall and watching it live that the 3er was coming. Previously in 2007 at the IAA Mercedes-Benz done something similar with the then-to-be-seen E-Klasse.
In the end they did not want to distract away from the importance of the BMW 1er and the other IAA premieres and have to answer 3er related questions. Which they could not. At least not yet.
But you have just under 4 weeks to go.
