A good fake from 15 years ago is probably nothing compared to the ones of today. Is it still worth the price it cost then? Or doesn no one want it anymore?
I think maintenance comes into play here (or the lack of thereof): If it's a proper fake with a mechanical movement it needs maintenance, as the original would. Finding a place where you can bring in your fake watch to have it maintained might be a bit more tricky, so people might not maintain their fake watches at all. This uncertainty contributes to the fact that fakes lose a lot of value quickly.
