Personally, for me, I wanted my law degree from a school in the NE, which is why I moved from the South; I had a great time living in Boston. But that was over a two decades ago, and as I get older am less tolerant of the winters and more inclined to look for a slower - and more relaxed pace of life.
We feel the same way every time we visit a big city. We moved here (central IL) from MA and it took a long time to get used to the lack of urban amenities like good restaurant choices and shopping, etc. And being away from the ocean and mountains was really a change for us. But now that we've lived here for 17 years, we find cities to be fun places to visit, but we're always glad to be home again after a week or two. So much more relaxed and quiet here. Just the lack of traffic alone makes it worth the trade off.
