Instrument Cluster without the epprom chip

Just wondering has anyone tried to use gauge cluster without the eeprom 30580 chip?

Would the meter function without this chip at all?
I have a spare cluster, i don't want to remove to chip only to find out i've ruined a perfectly fine gauge cluster.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the reason for you wanting to remove the Eprom?
What is the partnumber of the cluster, I might be interested in purchasing the complete cluster from you if it is in good working condition.
That is if interested in selling it.........
