528xi better than 535xi for maintenance

Shopping for a 5 series and my private BMW mechanic told me to stay away from 535xi for the following reason.

1 turbo goes big job $$$

2 or if injectors or

3 high pressure fuel pump goes its big bucks

He works full time at Bmw and has seen the common problems that occur

Your thoughts??

Thanks

Well, all three of those are more or less the same problem, or at least forced induction problems generally. What your mechanic is telling you is that the 535's engine is more complex than the 528's, which is self-evident since the former is a turbocharged equivalent of the latter, and in the case of the 528, a turbocharger that does not exist will not incur maintenance expenses.

But, then again, the 535 is a whole different car than the 528 performance wise. So - you have to prioritize according to what you want in your car.

Setting aside the HPFP issues that the N54 engine had, I don't think the 535s have had more trouble with the induction system than any similar product on the market.

I'm looking for a good BMW 5 series, with reasonable costs to maintain.
I don;t have access to BMW records, but it would be interesting to know the costs to maintain a 535xi vs a 528xi, if sold at same time to same type of driver.

Thanks for reply!

I had an E60 528xi produced May 2008 and now drive an E60 535xi produced Sept 2008. Electrically, I find the 535 to be more reliable? As for the engine, the 528 never gave me any issues, while the 535 has had several issues. The engine never failed, however it has been missing between 2000 and 3000 RPMs and no mechanic has been able to fix the issue. Every now and then the chk engine light goes on and from that, BMW changes another engine part on warranty (Vanos, fuel injectors, spark plugs, de carbonization, now the coils). The car has 54k kms.

However, even with these issues, I would never go back to the 528, because the 535 is significantly more fun to drive. The N54 has so much more power than the M20 and it is so easy to program even more power from the engine. With the Dinan Stage 2 SW, the car is a rocket. The 528 is relatively boring to drive.

Thanks for feedback!!! I would probably enjoy the 535 ride over a 528 too.

Since I will be buying a used 5 and the warranty will probably be finished, this is the part I need to be careful. You are very fortunate to have all these changes at dealer at manufactures cost

I wonder how does are doing with more warranty

Take care
Sergio
