bad smell

I recently bought a '08 550i with 80k miles. In particular when starting up, first few minutes the car has a terrible smell inside. I was informed this is the cabin air filter that should be replaced. the BMW dealer says replacing the filter wont help. They suggest deodorizing of evaporator. Double the costs though. What you guys think?

1. replace cabin filters. get charcoal activated ones. order online from pelican parts, ECS, etc. They're pricey at the dealer.

2. spray BG 'frigi-fresh' into the A/C vents.

you likely have mildew/mold growing in the ductwork. VERY common for BMW, they've been having that problem since the mid-90s. If you do both of those things, I'm pretty confident your smell will disappear. You can do all of this yourself. The dealer will charge you hundreds of dollars for something that you can do yourself for around $50 and 30 minutes of your time.
