To add another aspect, and definitely more direct:

There’s yet another reason for the auto-insurance surge: terrible, reckless, angry driving and its multifaceted consequences.

Since the peak of the pandemic, the car-centric lifestyle has gotten far more dangerous. The gun-safety nonprofit Everytown found that by 2022, incidents of road-rage shootings had nearly doubled from 2018. The federal government also measured record spikes in driving fatalities from 2021 to 2022. Even though that increase began to trail off in subsequent years, the sheer number of traffic deaths remains much higher than it was pre-2020. As a New York Times Magazine report noted earlier this year, a rise in aggressive and careless driving habits—speeding, running traffic lights, rushing intersections, driving drunk, refusing to wear a seatbelt—has persisted even as roadways have clogged up again. And drivers are pulling off these horrific trends while seated in bigger and bigger cars, ones which obstruct their vision and tower over smaller vehicles (as well as people).

That, of course, translates into money spent cleaning up the messes. Auto companies have been receiving not just more repair claims on average, but more severe claims overall, as Yahoo Finance has pinpointed. With bodily injuries (both in and outside of the vehicle) occurring alongside car damage, medical and property claims have escalated. Plus, there simply aren’t enough trained mechanics and technicians to carry the load when it comes to the more luxurious, multifaceted vehicles involved in all these crashes and injuries and killings.

Bigger, more dangerous cars that guzzle fuel and are powered by drivers who, carrying rage and bad habits from the COVID era, run rampant over our streets—that’s what’s helping to keep inflation higher these days. There’s only so much the Fed can do about that. So, if consumers are once again feeling pessimistic about the economy, maybe they could start looking at what goes on behind their steering wheels.

Oh man, I totally get where you're coming from! I was with Geico too, and out of nowhere, they bumped my monthly rate from $220 to $350—no accidents, nothing changed on my end. I finally made the switch to Progressive and now I'm paying only $168 a month for the same coverage. Really kicking myself for not switching sooner. It’s wild how these insurance rates are all over the place!!!

Angry NY (long island)

3 cars, no violations. $4600 per year, and thats after bundling with home insurance. Insurance has gone up 20% all around in 2023, due to the some aholes driving around with no plates, cutting up traffic and getting into a ton of accidents. Not like they have insurance, but you see that shit on the road on any given day in NYC. We end up paying

Please remember, not all coverage is created equally. Read the fine print.

I had one of the better know companies and they prorate coverage based on useful lifespan left.

I bought a house and they prorated the value of my roof from $45K to $5K. I immediately switched to Hanover who offered full replacement coverage. Yes, it was about 20% more expensive but I added a large umbrella and declared a few higher value items.

1 month later a massive hailstorm. The adjuster comes out and just starts pointing at stuff saying "Damaged, we will replace it". Even my grill cover.

Every contractor that I hired to do the work asked who my insurance was. When I said Hanover they said "Great! We will get started right away and deal with them directly. They always pay".

The one claim I made with my previous company was due to a storm with 5" of rain in an hour. I got water in my basement and they claimed it was due to inefficient gutters and denied the claim.

Revan I also live in Fl and insurance is ridiculous! I had 21 IS350 and X5M50i and it was $1176 for 6 months. Now I have 23 GX460 and its $1316 for 6 months. I have an M3 on order and was quoted $1402 for 6 months. This is American Family Insurance through Costco. Maybe you should get a quote from them if you are a Costco member. My coverage is 250/500k, $500 ded, etc.
Geico quoted me for same coverage at $3163 for the GX. Progressive quoted me $950 a month for the same car! My only claim was my Lexus IS350 was damaged when someone backed into it while it was parked.

Xenophobicly rant against immigrants and hate Biden all you want. But American drivers need to look in the mirror.

Why Did Cars Get So Expensive? The cost of insurance is up 40 percent over the past two years.

Quote:
Why are insurance rates so high and climbing so fast? In part due to interest rates: Premiums rise when borrowing costs go up. In part because cars just cost so much right now: Pricey vehicles are pricey to replace in the event of a crash. In part thanks to climate change, which floods and burns people’s garages along with their homes. In part because Americans are driving such enormous, heavy vehicles—four out of five new-car buyers pick an SUV or a truck—that do a lot of damage. Finally, in part because Americans are such awful drivers—episodes of road-raging behavior have increased since the pandemic began, and have become all the more deadly because the cars are so freaking big.
Indeed, the number of traffic fatalities jumped 19 percent from 2019 to 2022, and the fatality rate per mile traveled climbed 22 percent—something Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has described as a “national crisis.” Americans are three times as likely to die in a car crash as citizens of our peer countries.

I'm in South FLA. Insurance sucks down here. I have been with USAA for 15 years off and on. You have to play the switching game to keep the payments as low as possible. This year USAA was going to raise my 6 month premium about $700. I searched around and found a better deal with state farm. I have 2 newish cars on the policy with full coverage. I have no accidents or tickets.

I was with AmFam through Costco for years with 2 cars — $2250/yr at 100/300. When I called to add my new vehicle (iX M60 replacing polestar 2) they said they won’t even cover it.

So I had to shop around, ended up with Plymouth Rock at basically the same premium.

Premium for both the iX and 128 is $2500/yr at 250/500.

Definitely shop around. It can be painful, but pays off.

It just occurred to me that Am Family through Costco will not insure a car above a certain price point. I do not know the exact price. I tried to get a quote for a new Lexus LC500 convertible and they told me, they are unable to insure it due to replacement cost. I then asked them to quote for a 23 Cadillac CT5V Blackwing and they said the car will be covered. The purchase price for the LC500 was cheaper than the BW. The LC was $18500 off sticker while the BW was MSRP.

I asked what the limit was but they wouldn’t tell me. Msrp on the iX is very high.

I am thinking it might be around 115k to 120K. The LC500 stickers around 115K, but the Blackwing can sticker even more . They must use some sort of algorithm to accept or deny.

Didn't read the whole thread but insurance in the UK has gone up a ton as well.
Its not unique to the USA.
So its not about immigrants with no insurance...we have a load of ANPR cameras to catch uninsured vehicles in the UK.
We don't have guns for road ragers to shoot each other....etc etc
Its just a general upward trend in crashes/injuries/deaths by population number.
Insurance companies up their rates to ensure they stay in profit.
Even my wifes crappy 4 years old Nissan has had her premium double this month.
