BMW builds for the person that buys, or leases one from them, new, and they give a good, four year warranty. Future owners are on their own as various complex expensive peripheral components start reaching their mediocre design life. I do not know of any study that surveys long term reliability past, say 50,000 miles. No German car has components that outlast even the most mundane gasket on a Toyota. Perhaps that's why BMW and the others are by far the most profitable car companies. And that's why there are so many profitable garages in every city that specialize only in BMW repair. That may also be why their resale value is not very good, but which enables most of us to experience one.

Any car that has multiple extra features will suffer statistically from a reliability point of view. BMW makes some of the best bodies available. They are cutting edge and take more risks mechanically to produce the performance at a certain price. ZF 8 speed automatics are probably the best transmissions on the market as are BMW supplied brakes. Without argument BMW produces the best diesel engines but mostly for Europe. BMW's iDrive is considered the best on the market. I can go on.....

Nice to see the X3 at the top of its segment.

Take a close look at a Civic Type R or any new Civic hatchback. The panel alignment and gaps are amongst the worst you will see from anyone. They have been living on reputation for a while now.

Volvo's infotainment System is among the worst in the market.

I went to see the new X5 this week and was saddened by what I saw. The vehicle certainly is attractively styled but the fit and finish was very disappointing. The one I looked at had a full leather dash but there was wrinkling on it already, and a trim piece looked as if it had just come out of a CNC router.
In comparison, I also looked at the 2020 GLE and it’s fit/finish/material quality were quite far above the BMW’s. It gave a sense of luxury, while the X5 didn’t. |

CR members told us that they experienced multiple problems with power equipment, including areas such as the keyless entry system and the lights, along with the in-car electronics systems, such as the screen going blank and the navigation system failing More fake news from CR.
