Gas Leak - 2009 528xi

Approaching 70K miles, love my DD. Very well serviced including many items not in the BMW manual. Blackstone Labs report every 5,000. I'm sure you get the idea.

Filled her up the other day (never top off) and drove 1 mile home. Gas was leaking (1 drip every second) from the driver's side, right in front of the rear tire. Called the Dealer (have him on speed dial) and had her flat bedded to them.

They called, they said the problem was the gasket surrounding the sending unit. I know a little about engines but not much about the gas tank on my E60. Sending Unit is apparently mounted on the drivers side top of the tank. They removed the rear seat and found the gasket had deteriorated and needed to be replaced. Apparent only after you completely fill up. Now no more gas leak.

I have never heard of this problem before and asked the Dealer. They said I was their first to have this issue.

Anybody else hear of this?
